The Ghana Police have stopped a robbery and arrested one suspect while two others were killed in the process. This happened during an attempt to rob three banks in Labone, Accra.
The arrested suspect is Augustine Maazi.
The police shared this information in a statement on their X handle on Thursday.
According to the statement, the police got tips around 10:45 am on August 13, 2026. They learned that a gang was planning to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank, all situated in Labone.
"A police team was quickly sent to Labone where the gang's vehicles were found parked near the banks.
"When the gang saw the police, one vehicle sped off to escape.
"The police chased them and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The other person in the vehicle managed to get away.
"The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to flee while shooting at the police.
"The police returned fire, leading to the deaths of two suspects," the statement explained.
The police recovered two vehicles during this operation: a Toyota Highlander with the number plate GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with the number plate GS 7915-17. They also found a blow pistol.
"Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is in police custody helping with the investigation. The bodies of the deceased suspects have been taken to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy," the statement added.
The Ghana Police commended their response team for stopping the robbery. They also urged the public to keep sharing reliable information about crime activities.
