Police Stop Mob from Attacking Suspected Thieves in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has stopped a mob from killing two men suspected of stealing motorcycles in Gesse Phase 1 area of Birnin Kebbi. They also recovered seven motorcycles during the incident.

This happened on August 26, when the suspects, Rufai Salihu and Aliyu Muhammad, were attacked by a mob over claims they stole motorcycles.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said in a statement on Friday that police operatives acted quickly to save the two men. They were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Usman said, “One Boxer motorcycle was recovered from the suspects, while the situation later escalated when the mob allegedly attempted to attack a police facility in the area.

“Reinforcement was promptly deployed, and the mob was dispersed, while seven motorcycles abandoned during the incident were recovered and impounded.”

He mentioned that the two suspects are helping investigators learn about their alleged role in motorcycle theft and to identify others involved.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, spoke against jungle justice. He urged people to stop taking the law into their own hands.

Hadejia said, “Members of the public should allow the Police and other lawful authorities to investigate allegations and bring offenders to justice.”

The Commissioner warned that anyone who takes part in mob actions, attacks on police officers or facilities, or any form of self-help would face serious consequences.

He also emphasized the police's commitment to protecting lives and property while continuing their fight against motorcycle theft and other crimes in Kebbi State.
