Security forces have shot dead four gunmen in Anambra State during a major operation against criminals in the area.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday.
Ikenga, a superintendent of police, said the armed men were killed on Tuesday during a clash with the joint security team along Ogboji, Ajalli Road in Orumba South Local Government Area.
"During the operation, security operatives killed four members of the armed gang and seized several weapons, ammunition, explosive devices, and other incriminating items," he stated.
The spokesperson mentioned that police led the operation but did not specify other security agencies that took part.
This operation followed a tip-off about heavily armed suspected members of a secessionist group traveling in a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that other members of the gang escaped into nearby bushes with various gunshot injuries.
As a result, the Joint Security Team is stepping up efforts in the area, including thorough searches to catch the fleeing suspects and recover more weapons and equipment," he added.
Ikenga revealed that they recovered one General Purpose Machine Gun with 53 rounds of linked live ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, 21 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, and 13 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition from the gunmen.
Other recovered items included four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices, police camouflage uniforms, a white Toyota Sienna bus, 10 Android phones, two feature phones, a laptop computer, and a Point-of-Sale machine.
They also found two power banks, charms, two live cartridges, ATM cards, a national identification card, and a driver's license belonging to identified individuals.
The spokesperson stated that police authorities in Anambra have promised to keep up proactive, intelligence-led operations against criminals disturbing residents, working together with other security agencies.
