Rangers International will defend their top spot on the league table when they play Abia Warriors in a South-East derby at the Awka City Stadium today, Sunday. This is according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Flying Antelopes moved to the top after beating Warri Wolves 1-0 in a rescheduled match earlier in the week. This win came after they lost to Ikorodu City at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
Abia Warriors enter this Matchday 7 clash with fresh confidence. They celebrated their first home win of the season with a strong 3-0 victory over Bendel Insurance.
This win gives Imama Amapakabo’s team a boost as they head to Awka, hoping to take bragging rights against their rivals.
Rangers will need to be careful about how Abia Warriors respond. But the Enugu team has shown they can bounce back after tough matches. Their win against Warri Wolves has given them confidence as they enter this derby.
In their recent meetings, the matches have been tightly contested. Rangers have won three of their last six games against Abia Warriors. Abia Warriors have won two, and one match ended in a draw.
This game will also see Rangers play in a new venue. They have been moved from their usual Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium due to ongoing renovations.
The champions first played their home game at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. They then moved to the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, where they played their last two home games.
Now, they are set to face Abia Warriors at the Awka City Stadium.
For Abia Warriors, not playing in the intimidating Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium could give Amapakabo’s team a chance to secure a big win away from home.
With Rangers trying to hold on to their top position and Abia Warriors looking to build on their recent win, this Oriental derby is set to be a fierce battle for points and local pride.
Kick-off is at 4pm today at the Awka City Stadium.
