Rayo Vallecano's La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday was stopped because home fans at Vallecas stadium threw things onto the pitch. They were protesting against their president, Raul Martin Presa.
This was Rayo's first game at their stadium in La Liga this season. In the 13th minute, fans threw paper planes, rubber balls, and other items onto the pitch. The referee paused the game and sent the players to the changing rooms.
When the teams returned to play, the fans kept throwing things onto the field. The match was eventually stopped with the score still 0-0.
Fans and players have strongly protested how Presa runs the club. They are also unhappy with the state of the stadium and the training facilities.
Earlier this season, Rayo played three home matches at Leganes’s Butarque stadium. This was because their own ground needed urgent repairs for serious safety issues.
The Vallecas stadium has not been well taken care of during Rayo's lease. Madrid’s regional government is working to end that deal.
Last season, Rayo played one league match at Butarque because the Vallecas pitch was not fit for play.
