Rivers United, a team in the Nigeria Premier Football League, had a road accident on Thursday. They were heading to Awka, Anambra State, for their match against Nasarawa United in the President’s Cup round of 16.
The club shared details about the accident in a statement. It happened on the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road outside Port Harcourt, shortly after the team left their camp.
Some players and officials got minor injuries, but thankfully, there were no deaths or serious injuries.
"We wish to inform our supporters, stakeholders and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.
"The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition," the club stated.
Rivers United thanked their fans and the football community for their concern and prayers. They promised to give more updates about the team’s travel and the match status.
The Port Harcourt team made it to the round of 16 after winning 3-2 against Rangers International on Monday. They were set to play against Nasarawa United in Awka on Saturday.
The President Federation Cup is their only chance to win a trophy this season. They finished second in the league with 67 points, just one point behind the winners, Rangers.
