AS Roma has said that Argentina players Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina will not play in Lionel Messi's farewell match against Benin on October 6. They gave sporting and logistical reasons for this decision.
The Italian club shared this news in a statement on Tuesday. They mentioned that the long trip and their own club commitments affected their choice.
Roma understands how much this match means to both players. Dybala and Molina were part of the Argentina team that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and they have connections to Messi.
"The Club recognises the importance of this appointment for the two players, who are linked to Lionel Messi and played a key role in his victory at the 2022 World Cup," they said.
The club emphasized that their decision is not because they do not respect Messi or the event. They also stated they have "the utmost respect" for Messi and his achievements. They wished the Argentina captain and the Argentine Football Association well before the match.
"AS Roma expresses its utmost respect for Lionel Messi and his extraordinary career, wishing him and the Argentine Federation a special evening," they added.
The match between Argentina and Benin will take place on October 6. It is expected to be part of the celebrations for Messi's international career.
Since Dybala and Molina will not be participating, this means they will miss out on the event, even though they have played alongside Messi in the national team.
