Somalian Referee Omar Artan Gets Big Chance After World Cup Snub

Somalian referee Omar Artan will officiate the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on Wednesday. This comes after he missed out on the World Cup because he was denied entry into the United States.

The 34-year-old referee gained attention just before the World Cup in June. He was turned away at Miami International Airport, even though FIFA had chosen him for the tournament.

This incident ended his chance to officiate at the global event and caused a lot of discussions.
“It was a very tough period,” Artan said in an interview on the UEFA website.
“A lot of people have sympathy for me, because when someone has been working a lot of years and is supposed to do something, and then can’t do it, it’s very challenging.”

A US State Department official later told the press that Artan was “associated with suspected members of terrorist organizations.” This made him “ineligible for admission to the United States.”
Artan rejected these claims, which led to anger in Somalia. He was welcomed home as a hero after returning.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino also shared his disappointment about the situation.
“It is unfortunate what happened to the referee from Somalia,” Infantino said, adding: “We don’t control everything.”

Now, just weeks after the incident, UEFA has given Artan a significant assignment. He will referee the Super Cup match between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa.

This is a big chance for the Somali official, who will officiate his first match in European football.
“I was lucky, but I have worked very hard to be here and I’m really proud,” Artan told UEFA.
“As you can imagine, I grew up in a difficult situation, but it didn’t prevent me from pursuing my dreams.”

Artan made history in 2024 when he became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Now, he will take another important step in his career by officiating the European season’s traditional opening match on Wednesday.

“Having adventures, making memories and learning new things is always great,” he added. “When we got this call it was, for me and my family, really a very, very happy moment.”

UEFA mentioned its cooperation agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) signed in April as a reason for Artan’s appointment. The deal aims to strengthen ties between the two organizations.

But this decision also has political importance. UEFA and FIFA have often disagreed. Artan’s appointment comes at a time when the relationship between UEFA and FIFA president Infantino is tense.

The latest issue is the failed proposal to allow private investors into the World Cup. This collapse was mainly due to opposition led by UEFA, which has even talked about boycotting FIFA events, including the World Cup, to pressure Infantino to resign.
