South Africa's head coach Hugo Broos defended his team passionately after Bafana Bafana made history by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time. He said their achievement silenced critics who doubted them during the tournament.
A second-half goal from Thapelo Maseko gave South Africa a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Korea in Monterrey on Wednesday. This victory secured second place in Group A, behind co-hosts Mexico, and guaranteed Bafana Bafana a spot in the Round of 32.
This is a historic moment for South African football. Even though this is their fourth World Cup, Bafana Bafana had never gone past the group stage before. Their last appearance was in 2010, when they hosted the tournament and became the first host nation ever to be eliminated in the first round.
Broos’ team came into this tournament with low expectations after losing their opening match 2-0 to Mexico. But a determined draw against the Czech Republic kept their hopes alive before Wednesday’s crucial win over South Korea marked a great turnaround.
After the game, the experienced Belgian coach expressed his happiness about the qualification.
“I’m very proud of the performance of my team. I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths over the last few weeks who thought we had to change something,” Broos said after the match.
“We simply continued doing what we believed in. We stayed faithful to our plan and this is the result.”
For the 74-year-old coach, who has changed South African football since taking over in 2021, this achievement is very meaningful as he nears the end of a successful coaching career.
“I said before that this could be one of the last tournaments of my career. To finish a career like mine in this way is something every coach dreams about,” he said.
Broos also praised the special bond he shares with his players, saying it has been crucial to their success.
“The relationship between me and the players is special. Yes, I’m their coach, but I’m more than that. I think I’m their friend too. The connection we have is very strong.”
South Africa will now face tournament co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 in Los Angeles on Sunday. A place in the last 16 is at stake.
Even though they have made their mark in South African football history, Broos believes his players are not done yet.
“I know these players will be ready again. They want to keep making history,” he said.
“Reaching the next round would be even bigger. This group always wants to prove people wrong and show how good they are. Now we will see on Sunday if we can go even further.
