Tottenham won a Premier League match against Chelsea for only the second time in 36 years. An own goal by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders and a red card for Cole Palmer helped Spurs secure a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team got their second straight league win thanks to Penders’ mistake in the second half at a rainy Stamford Bridge.

Palmer, a Chelsea forward, got a second yellow card shortly after, while Mathys Tel scored a fantastic goal to give Tottenham their first win at Chelsea since 2018.

Since 1990, Tottenham had only won once in 41 away matches against Chelsea in all competitions.

This win ended a long dry spell for Tottenham. It was their second victory in the last 16 league matches against Chelsea, home and away, and their first win since 2023.

After a rough start to the season, Tottenham now sits in 12th place. They built on Monday’s win against Coventry, which was their first league victory of the season.

This was a tough loss for Chelsea, who had won their last two league games against Bournemouth and Everton. Fans booed them off the pitch at full-time, showing their frustration as the team continues to grow under Xabi Alonso in his first season.

With Joao Pedro out due to a late injury, Morgan Rogers led Chelsea’s attack. But their new forward line struggled to make an impact.

Rogers set up Palmer, who almost scored early with a curling shot that Tottenham's Antonin Kinsky tipped over the bar.

Tottenham replied with some pressure as Omar Marmoush shot from an Andy Robertson cross, but Penders saved it.

Chelsea had a great chance with a series of quick passes that found Jordan Henderson on the edge of the area. However, the midfielder’s low shot was saved by Kinsky.

Neto also tested Kinsky with a powerful shot, but the Tottenham goalkeeper made a good save at his near post.

Tottenham faced a setback when James Maddison limped off the pitch. This was only his second start since May 2025 due to injuries.

Maddison had already missed training after returning to the starting line-up against Coventry. His recent injury showed that starting him at Stamford Bridge might have been a risk.

In a messy game, Neto shot straight at Kinsky from a good position after Palmer took advantage of a bad pass from Sandro Tonali.

Palmer received a yellow card after running into Fernandes, who was on the ground after a handball.

Tottenham scored the first goal in the 77th minute. Fernandes’ corner should have been caught by Penders, but the young goalkeeper misjudged it and punched it into his own net.

This mistake was tough for Penders, who was making his first league start after Emiliano Martinez had jaw surgery.

Things got worse for Chelsea three minutes later when Palmer got a red card for stepping on Conor Gallagher.

Tel finished the win for Tottenham in the 87th minute. He broke through Chelsea’s defense and scored with a low shot into the corner from the edge of the area.
