Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their journey to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games with a 2-0 win over Comoros. This victory came in the first leg of their second-round qualifier on Friday.
After a goalless first half where Nigeria controlled the game, Michelle Alozie scored the first goal in the 48th minute. Uchenna Kanu then added another in the 60th minute, giving the Super Falcons a solid two-goal lead ahead of the second leg.
This result puts Nigeria in a strong position in this two-legged tie. They aim to secure one of the two spots available for Africa in the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Friday’s match took place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. This was the first competitive match for the Falcons under Augustine Eguavoen, who was named interim coach by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). They are still looking for a permanent coach.
Eguavoen has a good support team. Christopher Danjuma, who coached the Nasarawa Amazons, is part of the team. Ayisat Yusuf, a former Super Falcons defender, and goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa also support him.
Danjuma led Nigeria’s Falconets at the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. Yusuf has a rich history with the Super Falcons, earning 68 caps and playing in four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Nigeria got a bye into the second round because they were one of the three highest-ranked teams in the African qualifiers. Comoros reached this stage after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
The return leg is set for Tuesday, 13 October, also at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
If Nigeria wins against Comoros on aggregate, they will move on to the third round. This round is scheduled for 23 February to 6 March 2027, where they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
The African qualifying series has five two-legged rounds. Only two teams will qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
