A tanker carrying 33,000 litres of groundnut oil overturned near Abiola Garden on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos on Wednesday. The spill caused traffic issues as people gathered to scoop the oil from the road.
The crash happened around Ojota Bridge on the lane heading towards the Old Toll Gate. This blocked traffic on the busy road.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned residents, traders, and food vendors not to consume or sell the collected oil. They said dirt, road pollutants, and substances from drainage could have contaminated it.
In a statement on X, the agency mentioned that initial security reports indicated brake failure might have led to the tanker overturning.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed concern about people taking the spilled oil from the road. He said many do not realize whether it is safe to eat.
He urged locals not to take the oil home for cooking or sell it to unsuspecting buyers. He warned that possible contamination could be a danger to public health.
LASTMA reported that they sent out their rescue and recovery team along with two heavy-duty tow trucks to remove the tanker and clear the road. The police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency also responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported due to the tanker accident when this report was filed.
Motorists were advised to find alternative routes while the recovery operation was in progress.
