President Bola Tinubu has confirmed Nigeria's focus on boosting immunisation and local vaccine production. He called the partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, essential for better public health and for increasing Africa’s vaccine manufacturing ability.
Mr Tinubu spoke on Friday while meeting a team from Gavi at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The president expressed gratitude to Gavi for its ongoing support. He said the organisation has been key in saving lives and improving healthcare in Nigeria and across Africa.
“The commitment to humanity, the wonderful job of Gavi and the team is well appreciated, and the programme of acceleration for the production of the vaccines in Nigeria is empowering the continent,” he said.
Mr Tinubu called Nigeria “the heart of Africa.” He said the country takes immunisation seriously and is dedicated to making vaccines more accessible.
He recognised the worldwide discussions about vaccination but highlighted the need for science and consistent investment in public health.
“I know what is happening in America about vaccination and all of that. I’m informed, but we appreciate you, and we appreciate Gavi for all you do,” he said.
Praise for health reforms
Mr Tinubu also commended the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, for his leadership. He said the ongoing health sector reforms are showing positive results.
“The health sector has changed dramatically and is improving,” he said, calling Mr Pate committed and patriotic.
Mr Tinubu mentioned that Nigeria must keep investing in vaccine production and healthcare. This is important for protecting future generations and strengthening Africa’s ability to handle health issues.
“We owe it to the entire population to be foresighted, farsighted, and be committed to develop the capacity of Africans and protect the future generations of newly born,” he said.
He linked better healthcare to national growth, stating that poverty can be tackled through education, hard work, and patriotism.
He also asked for more support for scientific research and the institutions that drive innovation.
Ongoing partnership
Mr Tinubu assured Gavi of Nigeria’s ongoing support, calling the partnership crucial for reaching the country’s health goals.
In a light-hearted comment, the president mentioned the upcoming election season, hoping Gavi would keep working with Nigeria.
“Yes, it’s becoming an election year. I’m going to be seeking a return, so I hope you continue to be our partner,” he said.
