Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu has shared that he sent $1 million to Afrinvest West Africa without any written agreement or clear repayment plan after the 2008 global financial crisis. He trusted the company’s leadership completely.

Mr Elumelu, who is the chairman of Heirs Holdings, mentioned that the investment was recently paid back with interest. This happened more than ten years after he provided financial support to Afrinvest during tough times.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, Mr Elumelu explained that he made the unrequested investment because he believed in the leadership and strength of Ike Chioke, Afrinvest’s group managing director, and his partners.

He said he asked for the company's account number, sent the money, and told them to pay it back when business was better. "There was no documentation, no agreements, no terms," Mr Elumelu said. He described the deal as a sign of faith in the company’s ability to recover from its challenges.

Mr Chioke later took Afrinvest’s senior leadership team to visit Mr Elumelu. They wanted to show their gratitude for his support. Mr Elumelu said the repayment was about more than just getting back his money and interest. He said it showed that the company respected the trust placed in its leadership, which makes him more willing to support other promising businesses.

"The act of repaying trust, not just capital, is inspiring and encouraging," he stated. Mr Elumelu hopes this experience will motivate successful Africans to invest in people and businesses with potential, especially in hard times.

He warned that if beneficiaries betray investors' trust, it could discourage others from offering similar help. Mr Elumelu mentioned that Afrinvest has become a financial services company that employs over 200 people and runs six subsidiaries, creating jobs and business chances.

Founded in 1995 as Securities Transaction and Trust Company Limited, Afrinvest has turned into a capital market holding company. They offer services like investment banking, securities trading, asset management, trusteeship, research and consulting, and financial technology.

The current group managing director, Mr Chioke, has led Afrinvest through many years of growth in Nigeria’s financial sector. Mr Elumelu believes that the company's success shows how timely support for a business can create economic chances beyond the initial investment.

He connects this experience to his idea of "democratising luck." This principle focuses on giving opportunities to people who can succeed but do not have the needed support. Mr Elumelu shared that his own path was shaped by those who believed in him and helped him when he needed it.

"Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to believe in you, particularly when the odds seem stacked against you," he remarked. This revelation comes as businesses in Africa still struggle to find funding and increase access to capital, as many entrepreneurs need financial help to keep going and grow their businesses.

Afrinvest's journey shows how trust in business leadership can help a company survive tough times. Their official website defines them as a capital market holding company with various financial service operations.

The company has also shown its commitment to meeting financial responsibilities. In July 2025, Afrinvest announced the repayment of two series of commercial paper worth a total of N12.19 billion, showing they are dedicated to their investors.

Mr Elumelu did not share the interest rate, the total amount paid back in dollars, or the exact date of the original investment. He congratulated Mr Chioke and the Afrinvest team on their successes. He said the repayment strengthened his belief that honest financial support can create lasting value.

He hopes more wealthy Africans will back promising individuals and businesses, saying such investments could help build a continent where wealth is shared more widely, not just among a few privileged people.
