A traditional ruler in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, was shot dead during the burial of another traditional ruler in the area.
The shooting took place on Tuesday while traditional rulers and community members were holding funeral rites for their late colleague.
A community source said a gun was fired during the ceremony, and the bullet hit Akinola in the head.
The source, who asked to remain anonymous, said, "During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death."
The shooting caused panic in the community, and it is still unclear how the gun went off.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the shooting. He said one suspect has been arrested in connection with Akinola's death.
Jimoh stated that an investigation has started to find out what happened.
"One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced," the PPRO said.
