Four people were seriously hurt when a fully loaded 40-foot container truck crashed into several vehicles at First Gate, heading towards Mile 2, Lagos. This was reported by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Tuesday.

LASTMA stated that its officials arrested the driver of the Mack truck after the accident. The crash involved another truck carrying a 20-foot container, a T4 commercial bus with the number plate AAA 723 YF, and nine commercial motorcyclists.

The agency shared this information in a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, which was posted on X on Tuesday.

According to the statement, initial investigations showed that the crash happened because the Mack truck had a brake failure. This caused the driver to lose control before crashing into the other vehicles and motorcyclists.

The four injured people included three men and one woman. They had serious injuries, with multiple fractures in their arms and legs.

LASTMA said its team, which was managing traffic in the area, quickly responded to the crash. They started rescue operations, managed traffic, and handled the incident right away.

The agency's officers managed to pull the injured victims from the wreckage and handed them over to security personnel from the Roro Police Division. The police took them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

LASTMA also secured the crash scene, managed the resulting traffic jam, and helped remove the damaged vehicles and other blockages to get traffic moving again.

The driver of the Mack truck and the other drivers involved were handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution, depending on what the investigation finds.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the LASTMA General Manager, expressed sympathy for the injured victims and their families. He hoped for their quick and full recovery.

Bakare-Oki also raised concerns about commercial motorcyclists using restricted highways. He said this is especially dangerous on busy routes where motorcyclists are more vulnerable around large trucks and heavy vehicles.

He urged all drivers, commercial transport operators, and road users to be careful. They should follow traffic rules and make sure their vehicles get regular mechanical checks before hitting the road.

"Drivers of large vehicles must pay close attention to their brakes, tyres, steering, and other important safety parts before starting any trip. Making sure vehicles are roadworthy is not just a rule; it’s essential for protecting lives," he said.

The LASTMA general manager emphasized that following traffic regulations is key to reducing crashes, especially on busy roads.
