United States President Donald Trump has criticized England’s strategy in their 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. He believes manager Thomas Tuchel made a mistake by using captain Harry Kane in a defensive position after England took the lead.

On Saturday, the BBC reported that Trump’s comments came as more people questioned Tuchel’s changes in the second half. England fell apart against Argentina, who scored two late goals to secure a spot in Sunday’s final against Spain.

Many England players felt let down by the orders they received after Anthony Gordon scored the first goal. Tuchel changed to a back five and made defensive substitutions while Lionel Messi led Argentina's comeback.

Speaking on Friday, Trump stated that Kane should not have been put in a defensive role.

“You have a great player in England who I’ve played golf with. And he is Harry [Kane] who has been fantastic.

“I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence.

“We got to be a little offensive, right. But no, I’m not going to call it, what do I know about coaching? But that was a little unusual.”

Tuchel had previously dismissed the criticism about his tactics after the defeat.
