United States President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, spoke against Israel's military actions in Lebanon. He said the fighting has gone on for too long, led to too many civilian deaths, and hurt peace talks in the Middle East.

A video shared by Bloomberg shows Mr Trump speaking at the G7 summit in France. He expressed disappointment with how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is handling the war against Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran.

“Israel is fighting Hezbollah too long and too many people are being killed,” Mr Trump said. “You don’t have to knock down an apartment house every time you’re looking for somebody because there are a lot of people in those apartment houses, and they’re not all Hezbollah.”

Mr Trump also suggested that Syria should play a bigger role in dealing with Hezbollah. He believes Damascus might handle the group better than Israel.

“I suggested to Israel to let Syria take care of Hezbollah,” Mr Trump said. “I think they do a better job…”

He described Lebanon as a country that used to be home to great thinkers, doctors, and lawyers. He said the nation has suffered due to years of political troubles, economic issues, and conflict.

Mr Trump’s comments come as his administration works on a bigger diplomatic plan with Iran. He warned that a long-lasting fight in Lebanon could put this plan at risk. He feels the war has cast a “negative light” on efforts to reach a wider agreement involving Tehran.

These remarks are also made as Washington tries to create a larger de-escalation plan after a recent ceasefire and talks between the United States and Iran. The Trump administration has backed efforts to maintain a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, even as tensions and occasional attacks continue.

The recent conflict in the Middle East began when Israel and the US launched an attack on Iran without provocation on 28 February. This led to a strong response from Iran.
