A young woman named Eno was killed on Tuesday when a speeding vehicle in a convoy hit her near the Rivers State University campus in Port Harcourt.
Reports say the victim suffered severe injuries after her head struck the ground during the accident.
Sources told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that some people in the convoy ran away after they saw that the woman had died.
An eyewitness close to the university, who did not want to be named for fear of backlash, said, “The security personnel at the university and the police were quickly alerted, and they sealed off all exit points from the campus.
“Then officers from the Nkpolu Police Division, working with the university security team, later caught two suspects named Onunaka and Daniel. They are the drivers of a Toyota Camry Spider and a Mercedes-Benz E300.”
The source mentioned that the two suspects might be students of Rivers State University.
As of the time of this report, the suspects were being held at the Nkpolu Police Division in the Mile 3 area of Diobu, Port Harcourt. The body of the deceased was also recovered and taken to a mortuary.
Attempts to reach Rivers State University spokesperson Victor Banigo for comments were unsuccessful. He did not answer multiple calls to his mobile phone.
Banigo had not responded to text and WhatsApp messages sent by our correspondent as of Wednesday afternoon.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspects on Wednesday. She said an investigation is still ongoing.
She stated, “Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while the woman’s corpse has been retrieved and taken to the mortuary.
“So, yes, I can confirm the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.”
