Six people narrowly escaped death when a trailer carrying a 40-foot container fell from the New Parts, Nkpor Bridge along the Onitsha, Awka Expressway in Anambra State. The trailer crashed into four other vehicles.

Reports say a total of six people were involved in this accident. While two suffered minor injuries, four others came out unhurt.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. on Saturday. It also caused heavy traffic on the expressway as the fallen trailer blocked the road completely.

An eyewitness at the scene said, “The accident happened when the trailer driver suddenly lost brake while going down the bridge. He lost control, veered off the bridge, and crashed into other vehicles below.”

The eyewitness added, “Luckily, about six passengers in a shuttle bus below the bridge had already run away before the trailer fell on the bus. Some of them got minor injuries while escaping.”

Margaret Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. She said the crash involved four vehicles.

Onabe listed the vehicles involved as a Mercedes-Benz articulated truck with the registration number FTD581XA, a commercial shuttle bus with registration number ENU540ZJ, another commercial shuttle bus with registration number BKL661XA, and an Audi Volkswagen car with registration number ENU528MK.

She mentioned that the FRSC received a distress call at about 1:10 p.m. The rescue team from RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost arrived quickly to start rescue operations.

Onabe stated, “The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, wants to inform the public about a serious road traffic crash that happened on Saturday, June 13, 2026, around 1 p.m. along the Onitsha, Awka Expressway, at New Parts, Nkpor Bridge.”

She continued, “The crash involved four vehicles: a Mercedes-Benz articulated truck with registration number FTD581XA, a commercial shuttle bus with registration number ENU540ZJ, a commercial shuttle bus with registration number BKL661XA, and an Audi Volkswagen car with registration number ENU528MK.”

“The FRSC got the distress call at about 1:10 p.m., and the rescue team from RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost got to the crash site by 1:15 p.m. A total of six male adults were involved. Two had minor injuries, while four escaped without injury. Thankfully, there were no deaths.”

Onabe said preliminary investigations pointed to brake failure and loss of control as the likely causes of the crash. “Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer had brake failure, veered off the bridge, and fell onto the other vehicles below.”

“Before the FRSC rescue team arrived, the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for medical help. To allow traffic to flow freely and prevent more accidents, the FRSC heavy-duty tow truck was called to remove the blocked vehicles.”

Bridget Asekhauno, the Sector Commander, wished the injured a fast recovery. She urged drivers, especially those operating heavy vehicles and commercial transport, to maintain their vehicles and check their brakes before any trip.

Onabe added, “The FRSC is committed to making roads safer and responding quickly to accidents across the state.” As this report was being written, normal traffic was being restored and vehicles were moving again.
