UEFA Plans to Find Candidate Against Infantino for FIFA Presidency

UEFA is moving forward with plans to challenge Gianni Infantino in next year’s FIFA presidential election. This comes after UEFA decided not to boycott FIFA competitions anymore.

The 55 member associations of Europe and UEFA’s representatives on the FIFA Council are set to get a letter. This letter will confirm that the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan will not be brought back.

According to BBC Sport on Thursday, UEFA will officially announce the end of the boycott at its executive committee meeting in Monaco.

With this decision, the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland can continue as planned next week. All six European teams will take part, including England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and hosts Poland.

"UEFA remains confident that a unity candidate can be found to stand against Infantino when he seeks re-election in March."

To win, a candidate needs support from 106 of FIFA’s 211 member associations. UEFA thinks the election could be very close, as reported by BBC Sport.

UEFA has dropped the idea of a vote of no confidence against Infantino. This is because that would need 159 votes, or three-quarters of FIFA’s members.

No challenger has been named yet. However, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is seen as a strong potential candidate.

Nominations for the FIFA presidency are due by November 18.

UEFA believes that even if Infantino wins a tight election, his presidency could be hurt if his support drops sharply and people question his legitimacy.

Last month, UEFA’s 55 associations voted to boycott FIFA competitions until the Forward Enterprise proposal was fully removed. They also wanted binding guarantees that FIFA would not allow private ownership of its governance or competitions again.

FIFA welcomed UEFA’s decision to end the boycott. They expressed happiness that all qualified teams will join the upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

FIFA also stated that they believe football can bring people together in tough times. They remain dedicated to growing the sport through dialogue with confederations and other important groups.
