UEFA has shared a 14-point plan that calls for big changes at FIFA. This includes updates to FIFA's leadership, oversight systems, and funding.
The proposals were agreed upon by UEFA and 54 out of its 55 national associations during a meeting in Berlin. Azerbaijan is the only association that did not support the plan, according to BBC Sport on Thursday.
UEFA stated that just changing the structure is not enough. They want new leadership at FIFA. They stressed the need for a respected leader with football experience who is committed to development, reform, integrity, and independence.
The plan aims to limit the FIFA president's direct powers. It will also stop presidential or executive interference in ethics and disciplinary matters.
UEFA also wants to make sure FIFA's resources are not misused for personal or electoral interests.
"Another key proposal is increased financial support for FIFA’s 211 member associations, with UEFA calling for at least $10 million in additional funding for each association," UEFA said.
These reforms come just before FIFA’s presidential election in March. Current president Gianni Infantino is expected to run for re-election. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has said he won't run against Infantino. But he is focused on finding a candidate who can bring the football community together.
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has said he wants to run against Infantino. However, he needs to get five letters of support to be on the ballot.
UEFA’s proposals show a strong desire for changes in how world football is governed. The organization wants more independence and a fresh approach to FIFA's leadership.
