Unai Simón Joins Top Goalkeepers for World Cup Clean Sheets

Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simón has moved up to joint third place on FIFA’s all-time list for clean sheets during the FIFA World Cup. This follows Spain's journey to the final in 2026.

FIFA’s latest rankings after the semi-finals on Wednesday show that Simón has achieved eight clean sheets in 11 World Cup matches. He now shares this record with Jan Jongbloed, Emerson Leão, Sepp Maier, Taffarel, Thibaut Courtois, and Hugo Lloris.

The top spot on FIFA’s list is held jointly by France’s Fabien Barthez and England’s Peter Shilton. Both goalkeepers have recorded 10 clean sheets in 17 World Cup matches.

Barthez had five clean sheets during France’s winning 1998 World Cup run, one in 2002, and four in 2006. Shilton kept four clean sheets in 1982, three in 1986, and three more in 1990.

Simón’s record has improved thanks to Spain's 2026 World Cup journey. He has kept six clean sheets in seven matches this tournament, adding to the two clean sheets he had in the 2022 World Cup.

In the rankings, Brazil’s Alisson, Gilmar, Spain’s Iker Casillas, Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera, and Germany’s Manuel Neuer are tied for 10th place, each with seven clean sheets.

FIFA released the updated rankings after Spain's 2-0 win against France in the 2026 World Cup semi-final. Simón has only conceded four goals in his 11 World Cup matches, giving him a goals-conceded average of 0.36 per game. This is the best average among the goalkeepers in the top tier of the rankings.
