Manchester City fought back after halftime. Erling Haaland scored in the 52nd minute, heading in Iliman Ndiaye’s cross to level the score.
Villa took the lead again eight minutes later. Jackson scored his second goal of the game, with Ibrahim Mbaye providing the assist in the 60th minute.
City made two changes at halftime. They brought in Phil Foden and Rico Lewis for Rayan Cherki and Marc Guehi as they looked to change the game.
Villa also made several substitutions in the second half. They brought on Mbaye, Emiliano Buendia, and Ross Barkley.
The match had yellow cards for City’s Cherki, Guehi, Ryan McAidoo, and Elliot Anderson. Villa’s Johan Manzambi, Matty Cash, and Brian Madjo also received bookings.
Villa held on to their 2-1 lead during stoppage time to win at home.
This result ended Manchester City’s chance to win their first eight Premier League matches of the season. They had won seven straight games before this. City came into the match at the top of the table with 21 points, while Villa was 12th with eight points.
The victory also marked Villa's third consecutive win against City in the league. They had beaten City 1-0 at home in October 2025 and 2-1 away in May 2026.
Before this match, Villa had won four of their last six Premier League meetings with City.
City, managed by Enzo Maresca, arrived in Birmingham after a big 5-1 victory against AEK Athens in the Champions League. Unai Emery’s Villa had also won their European match against Viking FK 3-1.
