WAEC names new Registrar and Nigeria office Head

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Amos Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. Suleiman Kum has been named the Head of the Nigeria National Office.

Mr Dangut, who was previously in charge of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, took office as Registrar in October 2026. Mr Kum takes over as Head of the Nigeria office after Mr Dangut's promotion.

WAEC spokesperson Moyosola Adesina announced the appointments in separate statements.

According to the council, Mr Dangut replaces Pateh Bah from The Gambia and will serve a five-year term lasting until September 2031.

WAEC said its International Governing Board confirmed Mr Dangut’s appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March.

As Registrar, he will manage WAEC’s operations in all member countries.

Mr Kum, who worked in the Head of National Office's office before his appointment, steps into the Nigeria office after Mr Dangut's rise.

Mr Dangut was born on 2 October 1967. He studied Agriculture and got a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991. He earned a Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science in 2017. He also finished a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.

He started his education career at St Louis College, Jos, in 1994, where he was also a WAEC examiner before joining WAEC in 1998.

At WAEC, he held several positions, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security, and Branch Controller in Yola. He also worked as Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office, among other roles.

He was Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office's office from August to October 2023 before he became Head of the Nigeria National Office on 2 October 2023. He stayed in that role until he became WAEC's 14th Registrar.

WAEC described Mr Dangut as an experienced test developer and administrator with deep knowledge in test development and administration, as well as managing branch and zonal offices.

The council noted that for over twenty years, he has used technology to improve processes in test development and administration.

His career includes recognition from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his work in examination matters from 2000 to 2006. He has also received awards from the Ondo State government and Akoko South Local Government during his NYSC service.

Mr Kum was born on 16 October 1970 in Minna, Niger State. He is from Langtang North LGA of Plateau State. He studied at Baptist High School, Jos, where he earned his General Certificate of Education in 1986/1987. He later attended the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, where he received a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production with Second Class Honours, Upper Division, in 1992.

He got a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2025 and is currently finishing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at the same university.

Mr Kum began his career in 1993 during his National Youth Service Corps at the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, leading the Animal Production Unit.

From 1995 to 1998, he worked at Baptist High School, Jos, as a Form Master, Labour Master, classroom teacher, and Health Master. He received the Light and Life Staff Merit Award in 1998.

He joined WAEC on 17 July 1998 as Assistant Registrar II and climbed the ranks to Senior Deputy Registrar by 2024.

His roles at WAEC included Head of Examinations Security in Awka, Yola, and Makurdi, Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano, and Director of Administration.

Before his recent appointment, he worked in the Head of the Nigeria National Office's office. WAEC described Mr Kum as an experienced test developer and administrator with knowledge in examination security and test administration.

The council noted that he led several tech initiatives, like improving security in printing operations and introducing biometric attendance systems.
