Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has become a hot property in Europe this summer. West Ham United have joined Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen in trying to sign the 22-year-old Trabzonspor centre-back before the new season starts.
Nwaiwu's journey has been quick. He moved to Trabzonspor from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC in January. He helped Wolfsberger win the Austrian Cup the season before. Even though he joined Trabzonspor in the middle of the season, he quickly became a key player in the team’s defense. His strong performances helped Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup, which has caught the eye of clubs across Europe.
Fulham were the first to make a move by putting in a formal offer, but Trabzonspor turned them down. Reports from Turkey say that Trabzonspor want a fee that would break the record for the most expensive sale in the history of the Turkish Super Lig. This shows how much they value the defender.
West Ham’s interest comes from a mix of immediate needs and long-term goals. The Hammers were relegated from the Premier League last season. They want to come back quickly, so boosting their defense is very important.
The club is already lacking options at centre-back. Axel Disasi has returned to Chelsea after his loan ended. The Championship schedule is tough, with more matches than the Premier League, plus domestic cup games. This makes adding to the defense a pressing issue.
Nwaiwu, at just 22, also represents a long-term investment for West Ham. His ability in the air, smart positioning, and calmness under pressure have received a lot of praise. He has experience in both the Austrian Bundesliga and the Turkish Super Lig, which should help him adjust quickly to a new team.
With Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen still interested, West Ham may need to act fast if they want to secure a defender that many see as one of the best options available this summer.
