The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated he is in control of the political structures in Rivers State and the FCT. He is committed to delivering both areas to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Mr Wike made this known on Wednesday during a media chat in Port Harcourt. He called himself the “General Commander of the Political Infantry” and rejected the idea that only a sitting governor can manage a state’s political structure.
“You do not need to be governor before you can be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry; therefore, I am in charge. So also in FCT. I owe the President to give these two,” he said.
Mr Wike, who was once the governor of Rivers State, has been a strong supporter of Mr Tinubu, even though he is still a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He has promised to rally support for Mr Tinubu in Rivers as the 2027 election approaches.
In February, Mr Wike stated that supporters of Tinubu in Rivers do not need a sitting governor to gather votes for him. He argued that he and his allies have enough political reach in the state to ensure the president gets the votes.
His recent statement comes as there are ongoing discussions about the political influence in Rivers State. Governor Siminalayi Fubara has returned to the political spotlight after last year’s issues with Mr Wike.
‘I owe Tinubu Rivers, FCT’
Mr Wike elaborated on his political aim, saying he wants to make sure that Mr Tinubu wins in both Rivers and the FCT. He stated he would not sit back and let opposition politicians take these areas away from the president.
“Politics, of course, this is the time. You want me to fold my hand for Atiku to come and win the election?” he asked.
The minister also denied claims that he is moving back to Rivers State. He explained that his return is partly to reconnect with his political base and spend time with his family.
His comments come as politicians gear up for the 2027 election.
