Workers in Ondo State Universities End Strike After Four Weeks

Workers' unions in Ondo State universities have ended their four-week strike following help from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

On Monday, the Joint Action Committee of the Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI) released a statement. It was signed by Chairman Tayo Ogungbeni and Secretary Kunle Akinwonmi. They urged all union members to go back to work today, Tuesday.

The universities involved are Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo.

The strike began on 2 September because of unpaid allowances and failure to implement federal wage agreements.

JAC-ODSTI announced that the strike is suspended starting today. They thanked the governor for stepping in to resolve the issue.

"Following the financial intervention of our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa in the crises that led to an indefinite strike on 2nd September, 2026 by the Joint Action Committee of the Ondo State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI) comprising of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa and University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, we wish to inform the general public that the indefinite strike is hereby suspended with effect from Tuesday, 29th September, 2026."

The statement also expressed gratitude to the governor and other officials for their support in resolving the issue that hurt the education sector.

"We sincerely appreciate the tireless efforts of our caring heart Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, the State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Amos Ajibefun and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, members of NUJ, and the general public for the important roles played in the eventual resolution of the impasse which has affected our educational sector negatively."

They also called on university management to quickly address the non-financial parts of the federal government and unions' agreement. They warned against any future strikes.

"In view of the above development, our members in all the affected Universities are hereby directed to resume duties on Tuesday, 29th September, 2026, please," the statement concluded.

Boluwaji Oshodi, the chairman of the Adekunle Ajasin University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), confirmed the end of the strike.

"Yes, the strike has been suspended," Mr. Oshodi said on Monday.

Likewise, members of SSANU, NASU, and NAAT have also been told to return to work today, 29 September.
