The Zamfara State Government is asking for more help from the federal government to deal with rising bandit attacks on communities.

The State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa, made this request while talking to reporters in Gusau on Monday.

Mr Dantawasa said the state government is very worried about the recent rise in bandit attacks in different parts of the state, even with steps taken to control the situation.

He pointed out that the attacks are increasing despite efforts by both the state and federal governments to fight banditry and kidnappings in Zamfara.

Mr Dantawasa shared his concern for families, farmers, traders, and other residents, especially those in rural areas. Their daily lives have been disrupted by the rising insecurity.

Recent reports show that places like Bindin and Falale in Maru Local Government Area, Damba and Wanke in Gusau Local Government Area, Bagega in Anka Local Government Area, and Moriki in Zurmi Local Government Area are among the affected communities.

“These incidents have raised public concern and affected the sense of safety among residents.

“The impact of banditry goes beyond immediate danger to lives. It also disrupts farming, trade, education, transportation, and other important economic and social activities.

“The Zamfara Government is still working closely with the federal government to strengthen security measures and tackle the threat of banditry.

“To support this effort, four security battalions have been sent to Bakura, Shinkafi, Kaura Namoda, and Anka local government areas.

“This move is a key part of the joint efforts of the federal government and the Zamfara Government to boost security coverage and protect lives and property.

“Placing the battalions in these key areas aims to improve security arrangements and support actions against criminal activities affecting communities across the state.

“The Zamfara Government appreciates the federal Government’s help and knows that ongoing cooperation between both governments is important to deal with the current security issues.

“As a state that relies on agriculture, Zamfara's economy depends heavily on farming and rural trade.

“When farmers cannot safely reach their farmlands, agricultural output and family incomes take a hit.

“Insecurity also disrupts the movement of goods and services, placing more pressure on families,” the commissioner said.

Dantawasa condemned attacks on innocent citizens and communities. He called such actions unacceptable and a threat to peace, unity, and development in the state.

He assured residents that the government is working with relevant security agencies to strengthen responses to new threats and improve protection for vulnerable communities.

To boost security operations, the Zamfara government has provided 25 armored vehicles and 150 Toyota Hilux vehicles to support security agencies throughout the state.

The commissioner called for continued cooperation between both governments, especially in sharing information, coordinating operations, and providing adequate support to security agencies.

He also shared that plans are in place for dry-season security operations to continue the fight against banditry and enhance protection for affected communities.

Securing farmlands is crucial as farmers prepare for more agricultural work during the dry season. Residents must be able to pursue their livelihoods without fear of attacks or intimidation.

The commissioner announced that the government is training 1,000 forest guards for deployment across local government areas to boost security in rural areas.

These forest guards will operate under proper supervision, respect the law, and work alongside authorized security agencies.

Mr Dantawasa urged those involved in banditry to leave criminal activities and surrender through recognized channels. He stressed that surrendering should not mean automatic freedom from legal consequences.

He also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth organizations, and other stakeholders to promote peaceful living and work closely with security agencies.

The commissioner asked residents to report any suspicious activities and credible threats to the right authorities. He advised against spreading rumors or unverified news that could cause panic or endanger innocent people.

He encouraged residents to stay calm, alert, and united while continuing to pray for peace and security in Zamfara and Nigeria.

The commissioner assured that all security stakeholders are increasing their efforts to tackle the rising bandit attacks.
