The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 21-year-old man, Soliu Mujeeb. He is linked to the kidnapping and murder of a 60-year-old electrician, Mr Olarewaju Afolabi, in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Commandant Abbas Mohammed shared this news on Sunday. He spoke with journalists at the command headquarters in Ilorin about the ongoing investigation into the victim’s disappearance.
Mr Afolabi left his home on June 7, 2026, to check on an electrical installation project. He did not return, which worried his family.
Mohammed said, "The matter was reported to the NSCDC Tracking Unit on June 11, 2026, after attempts to reach him failed."
After the victim went missing, his family started getting ransom demands of ₦2 million from his phone. They managed to raise and pay ₦120,000 based on what the caller instructed.
Investigators used intelligence and tracked financial transactions related to the victim’s account. This led to the suspect's arrest.
"During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime. He admitted knowing the victim because he had worked with him as an assistant in electrical installation services. He explained that a disagreement between them caused the conflict," Mohammed said.
He continued, "The suspect lured the victim to an uncompleted building in the Kangile, Kulende area of Ilorin, pretending to inspect a new electrical project.
"He confessed to attacking and killing the victim there. He took the victim’s mobile phone and SIM card, which he later used to contact the family for ransom."
The suspect took the operatives to the crime scene. They found a shallow grave that likely contained the victim’s remains. They also recovered the victim’s phone and SIM card from him.
The command stated that the investigation is still ongoing. After this, the suspect will be handed over to the appropriate security agency for more action.
Abbas assured the people of Kwara State that the NSCDC is dedicated to protecting lives and property. They will continue working with other security agencies to eliminate criminal activities in the state.
He urged the public to stay alert and keep providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
