AAC calls for EFCC to watch Oyo government's spending before 2027 elections

The African Action Congress in Oyo State has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to keep an eye on how the Oyo State Government spends money before the 2027 general elections.

The party explained that this request aims to ensure that public funds are managed properly. They made it clear they are not accusing the state government or anyone of wrongdoing.

In a statement released on Monday, signed by AAC's Oyo State Chairman, Kayode Babayomi, the party expressed worries about how the state government is spending money as the elections draw near.

The party stated, “Oyo State belongs to all of us. Its resources must serve the people.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, the African Action Congress, Oyo State Chapter, has formally petitioned the EFCC to maintain vigilant monitoring and scrutiny of the pattern of expenditure of Oyo State Government funds during this electoral period.”

The AAC continued by saying they are concerned that public funds should not be misused for political campaigns or election activities.

“Our concern is simple: public funds must remain public.

“We are not asking anyone to be presumed guilty, nor are we making an accusation of a specific crime. We are demanding transparency, vigilance and accountability in the management of the resources entrusted to government.

“The people of Oyo State deserve to know how their resources are being spent.”

The petition, dated September 2026, showed that the party's worries came from what they called visible spending patterns. This includes money spent on political gatherings, opening a new campaign office in Abuja, and other costs that need closer examination during the election period.

The petition was filed through the party’s lawyers, Damilare Adenola and Co. Law Practice. It pointed out that the AAC is not claiming any specific crime has been committed.

The party expressed its fears that state money could be redirected towards political and election activities as the elections approach.

They urged the EFCC to take their concerns seriously, monitor how the Oyo State Government spends public funds during the 2027 elections, and investigate any misuse of funds found during this monitoring.

The AAC also asked the EFCC to take any necessary actions to protect Oyo State’s public funds and keep the public's trust in how these funds are managed.

This request comes as Governor Seyi Makinde is preparing to run for president under the Allied Peoples Movement. He was officially adopted as the APM’s presidential candidate in May.

The party added that their petition was made “in good faith and solely in the public interest” to promote transparency and accountability in managing public funds in the state.

They also promised to keep asking questions about how the state’s resources are being used.
