The African Action Congress has raised concern over an attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and his campaign team in Ekiti State.
The party stated that Sowore’s whereabouts are unclear after the incident, which reportedly happened around 1pm on Friday.
In a statement signed by Abdulkareem Musa, the spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, they described the situation as a serious security issue. They called on security agencies to find out what happened during the incident.
The campaign urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and other security agencies to quickly investigate the matter and ensure the safety of the candidate.
“We demand an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a thorough investigation into the incident. The authorities must not wait for a tragedy before taking preventive action,” the statement said.
It also stated, “Politics and elections are not warfare. No political actor or party has the right to engage in violence, intimidation or attacks on citizens exercising their democratic rights.”
The campaign warned that any harm to Sowore or his team would be unacceptable and insisted that those responsible must face justice.
In a separate message on Sowore’s official X account, the campaign claimed that armed thugs had kidnapped him and added that his current location is unknown.
“Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” the post read.
PUNCH Online could not confirm the reported attack or the alleged kidnapping at the time of this report.
The details surrounding the incident and Sowore’s whereabouts remain unclear.
The campaign did not reveal the identities of the alleged attackers or share more information about what happened.
Sowore, who is running for the 2027 presidential election with the AAC, was in Ekiti State for campaign activities on Thursday.
His absence from a Federal High Court session in Abuja on Thursday was attributed to his campaign work in the state by his lawyer.
The court later adjourned his cyberbullying trial until November.
