Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has warned that playing politics with security issues and spreading false information are hurting Nigeria's fight against terrorism. He urged Nigerians to come together to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the country.
He made this appeal in a statement on his 84th birthday, where he talked about the state of the nation and showed worry over Nigeria’s security challenges.
Abdulsalami turned 84 on June 13. He was the leader of Nigeria from June 1998 to May 1999.
He expressed sadness about the recent killing of Rabe Abubakar, a former military spokesperson and retired major general, along with many other victims of violence. He called this a serious moment for the country and highlighted the need for everyone to act together against insecurity.
Drawing from his experience as a soldier in the Nigerian Civil War and as a peacekeeper abroad, he mentioned that while many countries deal with economic and security issues, Nigeria’s current situation needs more national unity and support for law and order.
He said that fighting terrorism and violent crime cannot be left to the military and security agencies alone. Every Nigerian must play a part in protecting the country.
"The armed forces and all other security agencies have been very strong in the fight against terrorism. But this is not their fight alone. Every citizen has a stake," he said.
Abdulsalami criticized the growing politicization of security matters over the years, saying this has made it harder to tackle the crisis. He warned that terrorists and criminals thrive when security issues are used for political gain. He emphasized that propaganda and divisive stories have often weakened the national effort against common threats.
He also raised concerns about the rise of fake news and misinformation on social media. He pointed out that false stories often give strength to terrorists and other criminals.
He noted that the success of one terrorist group can motivate others, making it necessary for Nigerians to rethink their attitudes and actions that might unintentionally support violent groups.
He called on citizens, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political backgrounds, to join hands with government institutions and security agencies in fighting insecurity.
The elder statesman said that terrorists do not discriminate based on ethnicity, religion, political party, or social identity. This makes fighting them a shared responsibility for all Nigerians.
While praising the armed forces and security agencies for their hard work and sacrifices, Abdulsalami urged them to keep pushing on despite the challenges facing the country.
He also asked the government to show a stronger commitment and take serious steps to end the cycle of violence and tragedy affecting many communities.
Abdulsalami reiterated his faith in Nigeria’s unity and future, describing it as the only homeland for all its citizens.
"I joined the army to defend it with my life. I am a firm believer in a united and peaceful Nigeria," he said.
He added that one of his lasting dreams is to see a united, peaceful, and prosperous nation passed down to future generations.
Abdulsalami further urged Nigerians to stay calm, obey the law, and be alert. He noted that overcoming the country's challenges would need everyone to work together.
He also prayed for members of the armed forces and other security personnel who have lost their lives while serving, offering condolences to their families.
The former Head of State thanked Nigerians for their support over the years and prayed for the country's recovery and progress.
Earlier, as part of the celebrations for his milestone birthday, he launched three books about his life, public service, and contributions to building the nation.
