The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has pointed out that Nigeria's open borders are a big reason for terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking and irregular migration.
Mr Ribadu shared this on Tuesday in Abuja during the 15th National Security Seminar. This event was organised by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College, in partnership with ONSA and NDC.
He was represented by Yazid Gbemudu, the Director of Policy and Strategy at ONSA. The seminar's theme was: “Strengthening Nigeria’s Border Security Architecture for National Stability.”
Mr Ribadu said Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national stability depend heavily on how well the country manages its borders.
He explained that while Nigeria's long land and sea borders can boost trade, regional ties, and economic growth, they also make the nation vulnerable to various security threats.
“These borders help with trade, regional cooperation and economic growth, but they also open the door to threats like terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, irregular migration and other forms of organised crime,” he said.
“These issues show that we need a clear and united approach to border management.”
He added that weak border management allows criminals and terrorists to take advantage, which puts national security and development at risk.
Mr Ribadu mentioned that the National Border Management Strategy is a key part of Nigeria’s current border security plan. This strategy promotes an integrated method to manage borders effectively.
He said the strategy aims to improve intelligence sharing, boost border infrastructure, enhance surveillance capabilities and update border management processes.
According to him, using Border Management Information Systems and other technologies at important entry and exit points has helped with data collection, traveler checks and migration monitoring.
The NSA called for full implementation of an integrated border management system. This system would help improve cooperation among security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
He stated that sharing intelligence, carrying out joint operations and having unified border procedures are critical for tackling today's security threats.
Mr Ribadu also encouraged more investment in technology-based border security solutions. This includes biometric identification systems, advanced surveillance tech and data-driven security methods.
He highlighted the importance of stronger regional and bilateral partnerships. Many security issues at Nigeria’s borders are cross-border and need joint efforts with neighboring countries.
He also said that it is important to strengthen border communities by providing sustainable development, better infrastructure and economic chances. This can help reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities and boost stability.
The seminar brought together top military officers, security experts, policymakers, diplomats, academics and other stakeholders. They discussed ways to strengthen Nigeria’s border security and enhance national stability.
