The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) launched its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council in Umuahia on Thursday. At the same time, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced that it is supporting President Bola Tinubu as its presidential candidate.
During the launch of the 618-member campaign council, Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said President Tinubu picked them to work with him to make Nigeria better.
"This is a call to public duty and a defining moment for the country. Tinubu chose a difficult path to reform Nigeria. I can see him winning in the next election," Kalu stated.
Kalu emphasized the importance of the South-East, saying, "We must come together and shake hands across the Niger to remain relevant. Wrong calculation will take us backward, and right calculation will take us forward." He described the President as the key for the Ndigbo to thrive.
He urged that the President should be allowed to finish his eight years in office to complete the reforms he started. Kalu also encouraged the council to stay united and focused on their goals.
Abraham Amah, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, announced the coalition with the APC. He said, "I want to make it very clear that we totally support the re-election of President Ahmed Tinubu. We know he has done well."
He added, "No organization can do this alone. This partnership will help secure more for Abia State. It will make it easier for the President to appoint leaders from Abia State."
Chijioke Chukwu, the Coordinator of the Campaign Council and APC state chairman, described the event as a new beginning. He said the party has united for a common cause after previously battling among themselves.
Chukwu thanked Kalu for leading the party in the state and appreciated President Tinubu for the opportunity given to him. He noted, "The task ahead is challenging but also easy." He stressed the importance of delivering the President in the 2027 election to strengthen the state's position.
He urged Kalu to use his connection with the President to fill the vacancy in the Federal Executive Council after Nkeiruka Onyejeocha resigned as a minister. Chukwu also asked the President to appoint a true APC member for the position, stating, "The slot in the Federal Character Commission is an embarrassment to us."
