The Abia State Police Command has announced that they will take a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, to court for attempted murder. This follows an incident where he allegedly assaulted a woman during a fight over a pot of soup in Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State.
Maureen Chinaka, the command’s Public Relations Officer, shared this information in a statement on Sunday.
Chinaka explained that the suspect was arrested after a video went viral, showing him attacking the victim, Amarachi Chinyere.
The PPRO said that the Violent Crime Response Unit of the police acted on tips they received and apprehended the suspect.
She added that the suspect, who comes from Akanu Ohafia in the Ohafia Local Government Area, is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Chinaka mentioned that he may face charges for assault and attempted murder once the investigation is complete.
"Using actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have arrested the suspect, who was seen in a viral video assaulting Amarachi Chinyere over a dispute about a pot of soup.
"The case is under careful investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and the suspect will be charged in court after the investigation is done," the statement said.
The police command condemned the incident, calling it a cruel and inhumane act of domestic violence.
Chinaka emphasized the command’s determination to ensure justice for victims of violence. She also warned the public against any form of abuse.
"The Abia State Police Command once again strongly condemns this cruel and inhumane act of domestic violence and stresses that this type of behavior is not acceptable under any circumstances.
"We urge the public to avoid all forms of violence, as the Command is committed to making sure justice is served in the state and that those who commit crimes will face the law," she added.
