The Commissioner for Information in Abia, Okey Kanu, announced that the Nchedo Sexual Assault and Referral Centre recorded seven cases in just one month.
Mr Kanu shared this information at the Government House in Umuahia while speaking to reporters after the State Executive Council meeting on Monday.
He mentioned that the cases included six instances of sexual violence and one case of domestic violence. The victims included five minors aged between 10 and 14 years, as well as two adult women aged between 25 and 40 years.
He added that the cases involved allegations of rape and domestic violence against a pregnant woman.
The centre has provided medical help and other support services to the survivors. This includes medical intervention and surgery for a 10-year-old girl who suffered severe vaginal bleeding after alleged abuse.
Mr Kanu pointed out that the cases have been documented for proper protection, investigation, referral, and legal actions.
"This administration is committed to ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence are brought to justice, no matter what it takes," he declared.
The commissioner emphasized that this situation shows the administration's dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals. He also stated that it is crucial for survivors to receive the necessary support.
