The Central Organising Committee for the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta (ASTESF) 2026 has announced that the event will take place from November 3 to November 6 at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Emeka Enyiazu, the chairman of the committee, shared this information in a statement on September 1. He mentioned that the announcement came after a successful meeting with the Central Organising Committee and the Directors of Sports from the participating institutions.

Mr. Enyiazu explained that the 2026 edition will gather tertiary institutions run by the Federal Government, the Abia State Government, and private owners. This event aims to create a unique space for students and young athletes in the state to compete, connect, showcase their skills, and embrace the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence.

“The Fiesta is more than just a competition. It is a chance for talent discovery, youth development, and friendly competition. It will help identify and nurture the vast sporting potential of students in Abia’s tertiary institutions,” the statement added.

ABIA TERTIARY EDUCATION SPORTS FIESTA 2026: COC ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER 3, 6 FOR A FIVE-DAY CELEBRATION
Umuahia, Abia State, September 1, 2026

After a meeting with the Central Organising Committee and the Directors of Sports from the institutions involved, the COC of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta (ASTESF) 2026 has set the official dates for the much-anticipated four-day event.

The 2026 edition is expected to bring together institutions owned by the Federal Government, the Abia State Government, and private entities. This gathering will allow students and young athletes from across the state to compete, connect, showcase their talents, and celebrate the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence.

The Fiesta is seen as more than just a sports event. It offers a platform for discovering talent, developing youth, and encouraging friendly competition. It will help identify and nurture the sporting potential of students at Abia’s tertiary institutions.

Dr. Emeka Enyiazu, the Chairman of the Central Organising Committee, described ASTESF 2026 as a significant milestone for sports in Abia State.

“ASTESF 2026 is about bringing our tertiary institutions together through the power of sport. Whether an institution is federal, state-owned, or privately owned, our students share the same dreams and sporting potential. This Fiesta gives them a common ground to compete, build friendships, and show what they can achieve when talent meets opportunity.”

The COC is working hard to ensure that the event is well-organized, fair, safe, and professional. Preparations are already underway in various areas to ensure a successful sporting fiesta.

Local Organising Committees are being set up to handle technical issues, medical care, media, logistics, security, and other vital aspects of the event. The committee is making sure that participating institutions get enough information and support to prepare their athletes and officials.

ASTESF 2026 aims to move sports in tertiary institutions beyond just competition. The goal is to identify and develop talent since today’s student-athletes could become the elite sports stars of tomorrow, representing Abia and Nigeria on national and international stages.

The COC is calling on leaders from Federal, State, and private institutions in Abia to support the Fiesta and encourage their students and athletes to take part. They want every institution to view ASTESF as an investment in developing young people, not just a competition to win.

There will be winners and those who do not win medals, but every student should gain confidence, discipline, friendship, experience, and exposure from the Fiesta.

The COC is also inviting businesses, sports development partners, alumni groups, media outlets, communities, and other stakeholders to support the Fiesta. They believe that getting everyone involved will help build a strong foundation for sports within Abia’s tertiary education system.

The committee assures participating institutions that they are committed to running the Fiesta in a fair, transparent, and respectful manner. The safety and welfare of athletes and officials will always be a top priority.

More details about participating institutions, registration, events, venues, schedules, and other arrangements will be shared through the Fiesta’s official channels as preparations continue.

The Central Organising Committee appreciates the support of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme-Uche, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Nwaobilor N Ananaba, the Abia State Government, and all participating institutions. They urge the people of Abia to look forward to a great celebration of youth, talent, friendship, and excellence in sports.
