The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that a female child and four male passengers died in a road accident in Ebonyi on Friday.
Daniel Asanya, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki that the accident happened at the Nkalagu area of the Enugu, Abakaliki Federal Highway.
Asanya mentioned that the vehicle was heading to Enugu from Abakaliki when it crashed at Edema Bridge, Nkalagu, in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
“The commercial bus, a white Toyota Hiace with Registration Number: RSH 231 XE, had 17 passengers on board.
“The passengers included 12 males, four females, and one female child.
“Five people died in the crash: four males and one female child, while 12 others were injured: eight males and four females,” he said.
He explained that the crash was due to speeding. Items found at the crash site included three phones, two personal effects in sack bags, and a quarter bag of rice.
“The injured were taken to Annunciation Hospital, Emene, Enugu, for treatment. The deceased have been taken to the morgue.
“We advise drivers to always drive carefully, especially with construction and maintenance work ongoing on the Enugu, Abakaliki Highway.
“Drivers should also understand that roads will always need maintenance, and this is for everyone’s benefit,” he said.
Asanya also urged the construction firm working on the road to put up “illuminating signs” to warn drivers about the ongoing works.
