The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested an accountant linked to a burglary in Maryland, Lagos. Property worth around ₦150 million was reported stolen in the incident.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for the zone, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, shared the news with journalists on Tuesday in Lagos.

Jimoh stated that the suspect had been on the run since July 2025. He was caught on Monday while trying to return to Nigeria from Canada.

His arrest came after several months of work between the Nigeria Police Force and the International Criminal Police Organisation, known as Interpol.

The case started on July 11, 2025, when a burglary was reported at a residential home in Maryland, Lagos. Investigations began right away, leading to the arrest of some suspects connected to the crime.

"Those suspects were charged to court and sent to prison. However, the main suspect, who was the accountant for the late property owner for 17 years, escaped to Canada before he could be caught," he explained.

Jimoh said that Interpol Nigeria was contacted on July 16, 2025, to help track the fugitive worldwide. He highlighted that months of gathering intelligence and surveillance eventually led to the suspect being caught upon his return to Nigeria.

"The arrest shows the strong teamwork between the Nigeria Police Force and Interpol. It proves that no matter where a suspect runs off to after committing a crime, law enforcement can track them down and bring them to justice," he added.

The AIG noted that the suspect has already given statements about his role in the burglary and named others involved. He mentioned that investigations are ongoing to uncover the entire network behind the crime.

According to him, police are working to find and arrest anyone who helped in the crime, benefited from it, or knowingly accepted stolen goods.

"We are committed to making sure everyone linked to this crime faces justice. This includes those who took part directly, profited from it, or hid stolen items," he said.

Jimoh revealed that initial investigations showed that valuables worth about ₦150 million were stolen from the property. The items were taken from a five-bedroom duplex, and efforts to recover the stolen property are still in progress.

The AIG urged the public to report any crimes quickly, assuring residents that the police are committed to delivering justice for victims.

He warned that this arrest should remind everyone that fleeing abroad will not protect criminals from facing charges.

"Anyone who commits a crime in Nigeria and thinks that traveling abroad will stop their arrest is wrong. The Nigeria Police Force, with Interpol and other international security agencies, will keep pursuing offenders no matter where they hide," he said.

Jimoh reiterated the Inspector-General of Police's commitment to improving crime prevention, investigation, and prosecution across the country. He said the force will continue to work with international partners and share intelligence to fight transnational and organized crime.

He noted that anyone found to have knowingly received or bought stolen items will face prosecution along with the main suspect.
