The Ekiti State Police have rejected a viral claim that a bus with passengers from Ado-Ekiti was hijacked on the Aramoko-Ekiti road on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
This response came just a day after the news spread on social media about the alleged abduction of travellers in Aramoko.
In a statement on Monday, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the command called the report false and misleading. They warned those sharing such news to stop or risk facing legal consequences.
"The attention of the Ekiti State Police Command has been drawn to distressing information circulating on social media that a full bus conveying passengers from Ado-Ekiti was kidnapped along the Aramoko-Ekiti road on 31st May, 2026.
"The command, upon receipt of the disturbing information, deployed intelligence and tactical operatives to that axis to confirm its authenticity and take necessary action if true.
"It was then gathered that the alarm was false, created and spread by criminally minded individuals to cause unnecessary panic and discredit the efforts of security agencies in the state as well as the government in ensuring adequate safety for citizens," the statement said.
The police also noted that fake alerts have been on the rise recently. They urged residents to verify information before sharing it.
The command mentioned that they have noticed a troubling pattern of fake security reports in the past weeks. Reports about kidnappings, bandit attacks, and other crimes have been circulating on various platforms.
The public is encouraged to report anyone known for spreading false news through the command’s official channels.
While assuring everyone that the state is safe, the police asked residents to remain alert, follow the law, and report any suspicious activities or emergencies quickly.
"Members of the public are implored to be security conscious and law-abiding, verify news sources before sharing, go about their lawful activities, and promptly call the police on 08062335577 in case of emergency."
The command added that spreading false information is a crime and warned that anyone caught will face prosecution.
