The Edo State Police Command has denied reports that students from Green Park Academy in Aduwawa, Benin City, were kidnapped. They called the claim completely false and warned that they would track down the person spreading this rumor and take legal action.

In a statement on Wednesday, Eno Ikoedem, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said a woman known as “Azawoman” is behind this misleading information on social media. This has caused unnecessary fear among the public.

“The Edo State Police Command has become aware of a misleading and unfounded report circulating on social media alleging that students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, Benin City, were kidnapped. The false narrative, which is being propagated by a woman popularly known as ‘Azawoman,’ has generated unnecessary concern among members of the public,” the statement said.

After checking the facts, the police confirmed that no kidnapping took place at the school.

“Findings reveal that the report is entirely false, lacks any factual basis, and was deliberately disseminated to misinform the public and create unwarranted panic within the State,” they added.

The police condemned the careless spreading of false information. They warned that such actions can harm public order.

“The Command strongly condemns the reckless spread of false information capable of undermining public confidence, causing fear among residents, and diverting attention from genuine security concerns. Such actions constitute a threat to public order and will not be tolerated,” the statement explained.

Because of this, the police have started steps to find the person who started the rumor for questioning and possible prosecution.

They urged the public to be careful and responsible when using social media. People should verify information through trustworthy and official sources before sharing.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that the security situation in the state is under control. He thanked law-abiding citizens for their cooperation and called for continued support in keeping peace and security in Edo State.

The quick response from the Edo Police Command to the kidnap rumor shows the larger problem facing law enforcement in Nigeria. The spread of false security information on social media can cause panic, disrupt communities, and distract from real emergencies.
