The Ekiti State Police Command has denied a viral claim that a bus with passengers from Ado-Ekiti was hijacked on the Aramoko-Ekiti road on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

This response came less than a day after social media was flooded with reports of travelers abducted in Aramoko.

In a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, on Monday, the command called the report false and misleading. They warned those spreading such news to stop or face legal consequences.

"The attention of the Ekiti State Police Command has been drawn to distressing information circulating on social media that a full bus conveying passengers from Ado-Ekiti was kidnapped along the Aramoko-Ekiti road on 31st May, 2026."

"The command, upon receipt of the disturbing information, deployed intelligence and tactical operatives to that axis to confirm its authenticity and take necessary action if true."

The police found that the alarm was false. They believe it was created by people looking to cause panic and undermine the work of security agencies in the state and the government’s efforts to keep citizens safe.

The police noted that similar fake alerts have been going around in recent weeks. They urged residents to check facts before sharing information.

They also mentioned an increase in fake security reports lately. Many false alarms about kidnappings, bandit attacks, and other crimes have appeared on different platforms.

The public was advised to report anyone spreading fake news to the police through official channels.

While assuring residents that the state is safe, the police asked everyone to stay vigilant, obey the law, and report suspicious activities or emergencies right away.

"Members of the public are implored to be security conscious and law-abiding, verify news sources before sharing, go about their lawful activities, and promptly call the police on 08062335577 in case of emergency."

The command stressed that spreading false information is a crime and warned that those responsible will be prosecuted.
