The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State, Manir Dan’iya, has asked Governor Ahmed Aliyu to reveal how much money his government received and spent from May 2023 to September 2026.
Dan’iya believes this information is important for the people to judge the governor’s performance before the 2027 elections. He says the government must account for public funds before expecting opposition parties to share their achievements.
He made this statement on Sunday through his media aide, Aminu Abdullahi. This came after Aliyu said the All Progressives Congress would campaign based on projects done by his government.
PUNCH Online reported that Aliyu made his comments at the Government House in Sokoto after Jumu’ah prayer on Friday. He challenged opposition parties to show their records instead of attacking him personally.
The governor expressed confidence that his government’s achievements would shine during the election period. He promised a campaign focused on projects that help the people.
Dan’iya welcomed the idea of campaigns based on issues. But he insisted that the governor’s record can only be properly evaluated if the revenue and spending details are made public.
“Governor Aliyu should tell the people of Sokoto how much his government has received from the Federation Account from May 2023 to September 2026, how much it has generated internally, and how much has been spent,” he said.
“Tell us how much you have received before asking the people to judge what you have done with it,” Dan’iya added.
He also urged the governor to give a full breakdown of funds sent to the 23 local government areas in Sokoto during that time. This should include their monthly Federation Account allocations, local revenue, deductions, and spending on public services.
According to him, sharing financial records along with project costs, contractors, timelines, and proof of completion will help residents judge the performance of the state and local governments based on solid information.
Dan’iya raised concerns about whether the government’s spending has led to real improvements in people’s lives. He pointed out issues like insecurity, education, healthcare, water supply, workers’ welfare, unemployment, and public infrastructure.
He called for independent checks on projects that have faced questions about costs, status, or benefits. He believes claims of inflated costs, unfinished projects, or spending without results should be investigated properly.
The ADC candidate stressed that evaluating the government should not just be about announcing projects or sharing financial figures. He wants a clear comparison of revenue received, spending, completed projects, ongoing projects, and services provided to communities.
“The same standard of accountability should apply to the state government and all 23 local government councils,” he said. He emphasized that public resources belong to the people and should be reported in a way that allows for independent checking.
Dan’iya then challenged Aliyu to publish a detailed report covering revenue and spending from May 2023 to September 2026. This should include Federation Account receipts, local revenue, other incomes, deductions, ongoing expenses, capital spending, and allocations to local governments.
He believes that the discussion before the 2027 elections should be based on clear records that citizens, journalists, auditors, and other public bodies can review.
“The people of Sokoto have the right to ask simple questions: How much money came in? Where did it go? Which projects were completed? What changed in the lives of the people?” he said.
“Before telling the opposition to present its record, tell the people how much you received and show them the evidence of what you delivered,” the statement concluded.
