Members of the Action Democratic Congress Legacy Group in Kebbi State have joined the All Progressives Congress. This includes the party's House of Representatives candidate and two candidates for the State House of Assembly.
The Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, welcomed the new members on Wednesday at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. He spoke about how he became governor through divine intervention.
Idris assured the defectors that they would be treated fairly and have the chance to contribute to the party. He said his government will keep working to improve governance at the local level and will run programs to help residents.
He mentioned his administration’s work in agriculture, education, and healthcare. This includes giving out fertilisers to farmers, paying scholarships to students, and building or renovating schools and health facilities.
"My position as governor is a destiny from Almighty Allah, not just because I wanted it. I am thankful to Almighty Allah for allowing me to take on this responsibility," the governor expressed.
Idris called the APC a large party where the defectors would feel welcomed. He encouraged them to work for the success of both the party and the state.
The state APC chairman, Kana-Zuru, also welcomed the defectors. He said their joining is a boost for the party's strength in Kebbi. Kana-Zuru asked the new members to stay loyal to the party's rules and assured them their efforts will be acknowledged.
"I encourage all of you to be patient and loyal to the party constitution. Insha Allah, you will be included and treated fairly," he said.
Kabir Sani-Giant, the Governor's Special Adviser on Political Affairs and Power, also spoke. He urged the new members to stay disciplined and committed to APC's values.
Tanko Sununu, a former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and the APC House of Representatives candidate, welcomed the defectors too. He promised them equal treatment and support within the party.
Bala Maga Zuru, the leader of the ADC Legacy Group, spoke on behalf of the defectors. He said their choice to join the APC was driven by the development they saw under Governor Idris.
Maga explained they had been watching the administration's programs closely before deciding to join. "You have taken Kebbi State to new heights. We support your policies and programs, and we want to join you in advancing our state’s development," he said.
This defection adds to the ongoing political changes in Kebbi State as the 2027 elections approach. The ruling APC continues to attract members from opposition parties.
