The Imole Campaign Council, which supports Governor Ademola Adeleke, has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to assure Osun State residents of a peaceful and fair governorship election on August 15.
In a statement on Monday, spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi urged the police to remain neutral before, during, and after the election.
The council said the IGP should publicly guarantee that officers on election duty will behave professionally and fairly.
"The Inspector-General of Police must address the people of Osun State and assure them of a violence-free poll on August 15, 2026. He must back his words with action and ensure the neutrality and impartiality of his men throughout the election," the statement said in part.
Concerns Over Police Leadership
The campaign council also raised concerns about the reinstatement of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan as the Osun State Police Commissioner. They claimed some of his actions while in office raised doubts about the police's neutrality.
They urged the Inspector-General to make sure that security agencies do not intimidate any political group during the election.
The council also called for an end to what they described as the use of arrests and detention to harass political opponents. They stressed that credible elections need impartial security agencies.
Calls to the Force spokesman, Anietie Iniedu, went unanswered.
He has not yet replied to a message sent regarding this issue.
Upcoming Election
This appeal comes less than two weeks before the August 15, 2026, governorship election in Osun State. The Independent National Electoral Commission has completed its preparations for the poll.
Security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force, are expected to play a key role in maintaining order during the election.
The appeal also follows recent discussions about police deployments in the state after reports of changes in the Osun State Police Command leadership.
While political parties continue to demand neutrality from security agencies, the Nigeria Police Force insists that their personnel act with professionalism and remain non-partisan during elections.
