Air Peace has announced a 25 percent discount on one-way domestic tickets for passengers affected by the cancellation of its Lagos-Enugu flight on Monday, 21 September.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong shared this news in a Facebook post on Wednesday. He said the airline informed him about the discount in an email he received that day.
The flight, P47100, was meant to leave Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, at 6:45 a.m. on Monday but was pushed to 4:50 p.m., leaving passengers stuck at the airport for hours.
Mr Effiong mentioned that the offer seems to follow a directive from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) after he complained about the disruption.
The email he shared indicated that Air Peace apologized for the delay. The airline offered a “25 percent discounted one-way ticket (exclusive of tax)” on any of its domestic routes as compensation.
This offer is valid for six months, but it does not apply between 15 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. Passengers who want to take advantage of the offer must contact the airline’s call center. They need to have their previous booking reference, a scanned copy of their travel passport, and details of their new flight.
Mr Effiong, however, said the discount should not distract from how the airline treats passengers during such disruptions.
“This modest effort by Air Peace to appease me and other aggrieved passengers should not detract from the fundamental issue: the ongoing lackluster, arrogant and frustrating attitude of the company,” he said.
He said the Lagos-Enugu issue is “not an isolated occurrence.” He pointed out that cancellations and delays have become frequent with the airline.
He also referred to the NCAA's August 2026 disruption data. The data showed that 1,330 out of 1,864 Air Peace flights were delayed, which is 71.4 percent.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that NCAA data revealed 666 of the delays lasted between 16 minutes and one hour, while 400 delays were between one and two hours. Another 156 flights were delayed from two to three hours, and 108 were delayed for three hours or more. There were also seven canceled flights.
Air Peace disputed the NCAA figures. The airline said the regulator only recorded 1,864 out of 2,564 flights it operated in August.
The airline explained that many of its delays were due to factors outside its control. These included airport congestion, industrial action, and bird strikes.
Mr Effiong welcomed the NCAA's involvement in his case but called for better regulations to protect passengers.
“While the quick response of the NCAA in this case is commendable, we need a stronger regulatory framework in the aviation industry to protect air passengers' rights,” he said.
He added that passengers will continue to hold airlines accountable for how they treat travelers.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that the NCAA had earlier told Air Peace to create a compensation package for those affected by the Lagos-Enugu disruption. This was after finding that passengers received incorrect information about the flight.
The NCAA stated that the flight was rescheduled due to issues the night before, but the morning passengers were not properly informed.
Initially, Air Peace claimed passengers had been notified. However, after Mr Effiong showed the message he received, the airline’s station and duty managers confirmed it was sent in error.
The NCAA directed the airline to follow Part 19 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, which outlines passengers' rights and airlines' duties during flight disruptions.
These regulations provide for compensation in specific cases of domestic flight cancellations and set obligations for information, refreshments, communication, rerouting, refunds, and accommodation, with certain conditions and exceptions.
