Akpata reveals plans to grow Nigeria Super League

President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, has shared plans to grow the Nigeria Super League. This includes allowing foreign players and creating a transfer window. These plans come after the successful end of the tournament’s first edition, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

The tournament wrapped up on Saturday, with Middle-Belt Tigers winning the title. They beat Southern Sharks by six runs in a thrilling final at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval.

There were six franchise teams that played 20 matches over 10 days. The tournament was full of excitement and showcased many impressive individual performances.

Akpata praised the quality of cricket seen during the matches. He called the league a big step forward for domestic cricket in Nigeria.

“Two years ago, as a board, we conceived the idea of the Nigeria Super League. Most importantly, you players demonstrated what cricket means to Nigeria. During the organisation of the tournament, we needed to sell this brand, and the level of competition we saw on the field was fierce. It showed the passion you have and how aligned you are with us in building the Super League brand,” Akpata said at the final.

“Next year is going to be bigger and better. We are going to open it up for teams to bring in foreign players, and we will also create a transfer window for players.”

The NCF president also named Seun Odeku to continue as chairman of the league’s organising committee for the next three years.

Odeku praised the teams and the organising crew for putting together a memorable tournament. He said it has set a strong base for future franchise cricket in Nigeria.

“This is only the beginning for the Nigeria Super League. The response from players, stakeholders and fans has been truly encouraging. We are already looking ahead to the next edition, which we believe will be bigger, more competitive and more impactful for cricket development across the country,” Odeku said.

All six teams shared a prize pool of N13.25 million, in addition to cash prizes for individual achievements.
