The Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, has cleared the air on rumors of attacks on schools. They say there have been no incidents disrupting peace in schools.

In a statement on Wednesday, spokesperson Jimoh Adeniken called these reports “false and misleading.” He confirmed that there are no verified cases of bandit attacks in any part of Ondo State.

He urged the people of Ondo to go about their daily activities and business without fear. “The information being spread about bandits in Akure is not true. We advise everyone to ignore such reports and stop sharing unverified information.

“Residents should continue their lawful daily activities and report any suspicious activities to security agencies,” Mr Adeniken added.

Panic among parents

On Wednesday, stories of bandit attacks made parents rush to schools to withdraw their children, creating a tense atmosphere in the state. Even though there were no confirmed attacks, many women left markets and workplaces to secure their kids.

Initial reports claimed that St Loius High School in Akure was under attack, while later news suggested that Fiwasaye Girls High School was targeted. Although these reports were false, the panic caused fear in communities around Akure.

Earlier on Tuesday, a similar rumor spread in Odigbo Local Government Area. People believed that the local council had ordered schools to close due to fears of bandit attacks. Officials later denied this, saying no such order was given and that there were no threats to schools in the area.

Residents felt anxious because of a recent kidnap incident in Oyo, where school children and teachers were abducted. Schools tried to calm worried parents and assured them of their children's safety, but many still decided to take their kids home.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ondo State protested on Tuesday, demanding the release of the kidnapped children and teachers. Civil society groups also held a protest in Akure on Wednesday.

Both the Ondo State Government and the Police Command have denied the rumors, assuring residents of their safety.

Ongoing security efforts

Mr Jimoh said Amotekun has instructed all Area commanders, coordinators, and heads of tactical units to maintain special patrols 24/7 across the state's 18 local government areas. They are focusing on schools, churches, public facilities, and other key locations to prevent any criminal activities.

He urged residents not to panic or share unverified information that could create fear and tension among the people. Mr Adeniken reassured the public that Amotekun is committed to protecting the people of Ondo State and ensuring a safe environment for everyone.
