The All Progressives Congress has asked for more support and inclusion for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria. This came as they gave out cash and food items to hundreds of beneficiaries in Abuja.
The beneficiaries came from different disability groups in the Federal Capital Territory and nearby areas. They received the help during an event at the APC National Secretariat on Tuesday.
According to a statement on Wednesday from the APC National Leader of Persons with Disabilities, Tolu Bankole, this initiative aims to help vulnerable people in the community. It also seeks to encourage more participation of PWDs in politics and national development.
Jibrin Bancir, speaking for the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, welcomed the beneficiaries. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to including people with disabilities.
"I’m standing here on behalf of the National Chairman to appreciate you and welcome you to the APC National Secretariat," Bancir said. He mentioned that the party wants to ensure that persons with disabilities can benefit from its programs and policies.
"The little the APC National Leader of Persons with Disabilities, Aare Hon. Tolu Bankole, is doing, the National Chairman is backing him so that more PWDs will see the benefit of being members of APC. This is a party you belong to, and you are aware of what our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is doing to advance the cause of our country.
"I want all of you to remain firm and believe in what APC is doing as a country and to all of you," he added.
Bankole also spoke at the event. He thanked the APC leadership for their support of initiatives aimed at persons with disabilities. He called for more collaboration to improve their welfare across the country.
"We are stronger together. I appreciate the support of the National Chairman for his love and commitment to PWDs nationwide. He has shown leadership and comradeship," Bankole said.
He pointed out that the distribution event is part of larger efforts to provide relief and opportunities for persons with disabilities. "Today at the National Secretariat, we continue the distribution of cash and foodstuffs support to PWDs. Thanks to our dependable National Chairman for encouragement, support and leadership. We are stronger together," he said.
The statement mentioned that beneficiaries from various disability groups, including those who are visually impaired and hearing-impaired, expressed gratitude for the assistance. They described it as timely help amid ongoing economic challenges.
The event also aimed to advocate for more inclusion of persons with disabilities in governance, economic activities, and public life. The party urged government agencies, private organizations, and development partners to work harder to remove barriers that limit opportunities for PWDs.
They also emphasized that the welfare of persons with disabilities is a priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda. They called on all stakeholders to work together to build a more inclusive society where every citizen, no matter their physical ability, can contribute meaningfully to national development.
